How do you type on the iPhone: Portrait or landscape? [Poll]

How do you type on the iPhone: Portrait or landscape? [Poll]

Last night we asked you how you grip the iPhone while typing, and tonight we're continuing our typing series by asking you about your orientation -- portrait or landscape?

Apple says they designed the iPhone with one-handed ease of use in mind, and maybe that's why it took them until iOS 3 to make landscape mode persistent across most of the built-in apps. But for a lot of people, the extra-wide, Cadillac-style typing experience of landscape is exactly what they want, number of hands it takes to hold and use it be damned.

For others, it might depend on the app. Portrait for on the go or quick stuff, landscape for speed-texting or longer-form writing.

When you want to get your type on, which orientation do you hold your iPhone? Portrait or landscape? Vote in the poll up top and give us the details and why you do what you do below!

Iran to sue Hollywood for fear-mongering with 'Argo'

Citing director Ben Affleck?s Oscar-winning film ?Argo? as ?the most recent example of various fear-mongering tactics? used by Hollywood, the semi-official Fars News Agency said?French lawyer Isabelle Coutant-Peyre, widely known for defending Venezuelan-born terrorist?Ilich Ram?rez S?nchez (?Carlos the Jackal?), is in Tehran for talks with Iranian government officials to determine where and how a lawsuit should be filed.?

?These people [in Hollywood] are using films to propagate global panic about Iran,??Fars cites Ms. Coutant-Peyre as saying. ??The act [of the lawsuit] itself is valuable,? added Ms. Coutant-Peyre, ?because it can stir interest and discussion among the peoples of the world, until they can discern between what is the truth and what are lies about Iran, and think about them.? The dialogue created by Hollywood [about Iran] can?t be one-sided."

It is unclear who will specifically be named in Iran's lawsuit. ?Ms. Coutant-Peyre said she has prepared a case and will provide more details at a press conference Wednesday, Fars reports.

?Argo? was privately screened in downtown Tehran on Monday as part of a state-organized conference on ?Hollywood Deceit," according to state media reports.?

Based?on a true story about how the CIA, with the help of Canadian officials, smuggled six American diplomats out of Iran after the 1979 takeover of the US Embassy, ?Argo? was first screened at the Toronto Film Festival on Sept. 7, the same day Canada closed its embassy in Tehran and expelled Iran?s diplomats from the Canadian capital, Ottawa.?

Nigeria c.bank holds rate at 12 pct despite lower inflation

ABUJA (Reuters) - Nigeria's central bank kept rates on hold at 12 percent for a ninth time in a row, citing concerns over ongoing external price pressures, despite the headline inflation rate being within the bank's target band.

Increasing macroeconomic stability in Africa's second biggest economy, including a more stable naira currency, is drawing in foreign investors, but many are still wary of excessive government spending and widespread corruption.

Central Bank Governor Lamido Sanusi said on Tuesday that while Nigeria had achieved "a reasonable degree of moderation" with consumer prices, this was largely to do with cuts to the fuel subsidy no longer feeding through to higher prices, adding that there was still an upside risk to inflation.

The bank's decision was a 9-3 majority, Sanusi said. Most analysts had expected the bank to keep rates on hold.

The bank also held the cash reserve requirement at 12 percent, and the liquidity ratio at 30 percent.

Nigerian consumer inflation rose to 9.5 percent in February, from 9 percent in January, the statistics bureau said on Saturday, but it was within the central bank's single digit target for a second month in a row.

"The sharp drop in inflation in early 2013, compared with early 2012, is largely to do with the base effect of the partial removal of the fuel subsidy," Sanusi said, and therefore did not necessarily reflect a sustainable downward trend.

President Goodluck Jonathan attempted to remove Nigeria's blanket motor fuel subsidy in January 2012, and although mass protests forced him to partly reinstate it, he was able to increase fuel prices by around 50 percent.

The central bank has come under increasing pressure from business lobbies to cut rates to stimulate the economy.

"The committee carefully weighed the action of relaxing monetary policy, noting that reversing the current trend of monetary policy might have signalled a preference for a higher inflation rate," Sanusi said.

"There is still an upside risk to inflation in the near to medium term ... while equity prices have been trending upwards."

The corridor for borrowing and lending to the bank was kept at 200 basis points around the base rate.

A shock fall in the naira last week prompted the bank to intervene on Friday to support it by selling dollars. Sanusi only noted that the naira remained within the target range of 3 naira plus or minus 155 to the dollar.

But analysts suspected last week's fall in the local unit may have sealed the decision to hold rather than cut rates.

"In this context, reducing policy rates would have been counterproductive with the potential to lead to further naira weakness," said Standard Bank's Samir Gadio.

Sanusi told Reuters last month that the bank would not be pressured into cutting rates anytime soon, because it "cannot take stability for granted."

The bank has kept rates on hold since November after six successive hikes last year - including a 275 basis point rise in October to 12 percent - to ward off speculation against the naira. The currency rose 1.8 percent against the dollar in 2012.

Why do you write?

I write to change my world by revising it and giving it a happy ending. I think most write fiction to create new realities and new ways of expressing ourselves. It gives us the power to fix anything we don?t like in the real world. We write to escape, and to escape we must express ourselves in our writers voices.

Who do you become when you write?

First, you become vulnerable. You must become the characters, all of them ? even the bad guys. For the characters to be compelling I believe they must contain some real part of the writer?s personality. You have all the voices inside you waiting to come out; they only need the right character. Being able to let them each speak for themselves, individually, is your writers voice. You literally must pour yourself into your writing. That isn?t as much a cliche as you may have thought.

Have you ever found an old writing of yours, something you?d written a few years ago, and heard a certain voice that brought up emotions? It will have a tone of realism that could be embarrassing or pleasant, depending on the words and topic you chose, but it?s your real writers voice. It is probably something you wrote on the spur of the moment while in a particular emotional state. Learn to control it by becoming each character. To become each character, you must know them well. Study them, make them individuals by basing them on someone real.

I?ve heard some creative writers say they don?t worry about the characters, because they think the story is more important. They admit throwing card-board characters in as they?re needed to get the story to the finish line. I haven?t read their work so I don?t know if they can pull it off or not, but I wonder who performs the action, how is emotion brought in? I think even if it?s completely narrated, the narrator still needs a strong voice.

I agree with the statement that the story is important, but the characters are at least equally important. Good ones can fool the reader into thinking even a bad story is good. Good, solid characters with consistently strong voices can sell mediocre serial books. Readers read to escape. They don?t know or care that the writer was forced to draw on painful memories and cry buckets of tears to make the characters true-to-life; they just know if they can identify with them or not. They can?t become that particular character or overcome the obstacle, without the true writer?s voice bringing the character to life. Bottom line ? they won?t like your story.

So, to find your writers voice, dig through all the animosity, fear, anger, cruelty, joy and heartbreak of everyday living, past, present and perceived. Twist it, exaggerate it, and give it to your characters to work out. Your readers will love it.

Upgrade Your Fixer-Upper With These Home Improvement Tips ...

Whether or not you live in a house, a, apartment or even a trailer, making changes to your home is definitely a good idea. However, if you are unsure what projects to try or just how to begin them, it is good to have a few ideas and observations before you get going.

To include a unifying effect to your home?s design, consider painting all of the trim white (or another color that enhances every room?s walls). Matching cut throughout the house provides visual continuity as you move from room to room and ties your design together.

Flooring could be a relatively simple do it yourself project even for a novice. Give attention to putting tile in your kitchen and bathrooms and change your rug with hardwood flooring. Diy stores have a wealth of information regarding steps to make this technique simple for one to complete.

Should you not are already a really strong person changing a tire can be difficult. Loosening the lug nuts, in particular, usually takes more energy than most of us have. Use a spouse club! A yard long bit of pipe that?s just large enough to fit over the end of your haul wrench will give you that extra leverage to obtain the work done.

Generally speaking, when painting an area, you should apply a to the walls, to permit for better adherence by the paint. However, now there is definitely an choice that you may desire to try. Many hardware stores now sell products and services which have a mix of paint and primer. This reduces the primer stage and boosts the method of painting.

It?s never a bad idea to purchase portable fire extinguishers for your home. Take a moment to learn the presentation for home elevators intended use, before you buy an extinguisher. Some extinguishers are effective only against certain forms of fires. Essentially, an extinguisher should be suitable for paper, fat, wood, electric, and trash fires. This will also be into consideration as you decide which locations could have extinguishers at hand.

Replacing the equipment in your home such as for instance doorknobs, hinges, draws, light fixtures, and so on, could convert a home in one age to another. It is a quick and easy solution to help your house be look newer and more updated by simply switching out these small details. Covered nickel and copper are new developments that?ll enhance your look.

Copper is definitely the most attractive building material for robbers, so exercise care when installing copper tube and wiring. Wherever possible these installations shouldn?t be achieved before house, ultimately the whole property, may be protected by key and lock. Thieves are skilled at stripping copper from a building site rapidly. Protect your copper items, so that you do not end up buying it twice.

Constantly closed doors could make a hallway or corridor look uninviting and uncomfortably thin. Replace your strong door with a French door, that includes a series of clear glass panels framed by wood. Decide for transparent glass or a glue to offer a ?frosted? search to the glass, If you?re worried about privacy. Home Depot and Lowe?s take adhesive screen films at under twenty pounds.

Landscapes add to the beauty of your house. Consider replacing or adding someone to your home for anyone who is preparing to sell. Landscapes help the buyer to see greater opportunities with the home and allows them to imagine all the things they can do to the house themselves.

If a drastic change is needed by you to the surface of your house, simple gardening could work miracles. You will see that applying a yard or two around the trees, pruning bushes and home, and cleaning the yard really makes a fantastic search around the home that doesn?t even take much to accomplish.

Remember, record is generally a temporary fix! Taping something could be convenient to do in a pinch, but record will degrade and or tear with time. Do not allow a vintage task come back to haunt you! When you have a while do the project right. The only real time that tape is a means to fix a problem is all through electrical work, when you?re able to use electrical tape to insulate the wiring from water (and even then heat-shrink strips certainly are a better choice).

Be sure to get multiple offers for the project, If you?re hiring someone to conduct your house improvement work. This method ensures that you are getting the best deal on your task, and it helps you be much more acquainted with a and what to expect from your builder, although it can be quite a very little time consuming.

When increasing the outdoor of your home, replace your garage door. When someone is considering your home from the surface, the garage door is just a major feature. You can put in a new garage door to offer your home with a new and beautiful function which will attract focus on your home.

If you are not used to do it yourself begin with the simplest task. If you are beginning with a task, the knowledge is not likely to be as exciting or successful. To make certain you acquire the training you need, you need to start small, learning the tougher techniques as you go on to larger projects.

First consider putting crown molding or applying a new coat of paint to the walls, If you like to enhance the look of the areas in your home with decorative objects. Crown molding can allow it to be look more finished and elegant and add a little extra to the space. If your ceilings are very low, this may maybe not be a wise decision nevertheless.

An effective way to add value to your home is always to add a sun room to the back of your dwelling. Any moment you put square footage to your house, you?re increasing its price. Also, a sun room looks great, offering your house more interest a consumer.

when you have some clear ideas on what to complete and how to start them as previously mentioned earlier in this specific article, home developments happen best. Simply take the tips using this part and use them to your residence today. In no time at all you could will find yourself living in a happier, healthier home. affordable contracting services reviews

More charges possible in Ohio rape case

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (AP) ? The ordeal of an eastern Ohio community roiled by allegations of rape against two high school football players is far from over, despite the teens' conviction for the crime and their sentence to juvenile prison terms.

The announcement of the verdict was barely an hour old Sunday when state Attorney General Mike DeWine said he was continuing his investigation and would consider charges against anyone who failed to speak up after the attack last summer, a group that could include other teens, parents, coaches and school officials.

A grand jury will meet in mid-April to consider evidence gathered by investigators from dozens of interviews, including with the football team's 27 coaches.

Text messages introduced at the trial suggested the head coach was aware of the rape allegation early on. DeWine said coaches are among officials required by state law to report child abuse. The coach and the school district have repeatedly declined to comment.

"I've reached the conclusion that this investigation cannot be completed, simply cannot be completed, that we cannot bring finality to this matter without the convening of a grand jury," DeWine said.

The attorney general, Ohio's top law enforcement official, also said the rape was not an isolated problem specific to Steubenville. Sexual assaults occur every Friday and Saturday night across the country, DeWine said, calling it "a societal problem."

Trent Mays, 17, and Ma'Lik Richmond, 16, were sentenced to at least a year in juvenile prison in a case that has rocked this Rust Belt city of 18,000 and led to allegations of a cover-up to protect the Steubenville High team, which has won nine state championships. Mays was ordered to serve an additional year for photographing the underage girl naked.

They can be held until they turn 21.

The two broke down in tears after a Juvenile Court judge delivered his verdict. They later apologized to the victim and the community, Richmond struggling to speak through his sobs.

"My life is over," he said as he collapsed in the arms of his lawyer.

The crime, which took place after a party last summer, shocked many in Steubenville because of the seeming callousness with which other students took out their cellphones to record the attack and gossiped about it online. In fact, the case came to light via a barrage of morning-after text messages, social media posts and online photos and video.

"Many of the things we learned during this trial that our children were saying and doing were profane, were ugly," Judge Thomas Lipps said.

Mays and Richmond were charged with penetrating the West Virginia girl with their fingers, first in the back seat of a moving car after a mostly underage drinking party on Aug. 11, and then in the basement of a house.

"They treated her like a toy," prosecutor Marianne Hemmeter said.

Prosecutors argued that the victim was so intoxicated she couldn't consent to sex that night, while the defense contended the girl realized what she was doing and was known to lie.

The girl testified she could not recall what happened but woke up naked in a strange house after drinking at a party.

"It was really scary," she said. "I honestly did not know what to think because I could not remember anything."

She said she believed she was assaulted when she later read text messages among friends and saw a photo of herself naked, along with a video that made fun of her and the alleged attack.

Three other boys, two of them on the football team, saw something happening that night and didn't try to stop it but instead recorded it with their cellphones. Granted immunity to testify, they confirmed the girl was assaulted and said she was so drunk she didn't seem to know what was happening.

Evidence at the trial also included sexually explicit text messages sent by numerous students after the party. Lawyers noted how texts have seemed to replace talking on the phone for young people. A computer forensic expert documented hundreds of thousands of texts found on 17 phones seized during the investigation.

In sentencing the boys, Lipps urged parents and others "to have discussions about how you talk to your friends, how you record things on the social media so prevalent today and how you conduct yourself when drinking is put upon you by your friends."

After the arrests, the case was furiously debated on blogs and social media, with some people warning of conspiracies and conflicts of interest. On Sunday, Hemmeter, the prosecutor, criticized efforts by the hacker collective Anonymous to publicize the case, saying the attention had a chilling effect on those willing to testify.

After the verdict, the accuser's mother rebuked the boys for "lack of any moral code."

"You were your own accuser, through the social media that you chose to publish your criminal conduct on," she said. She added that the case "does not define who my daughter is. She will persevere, grow and move on."

Echoing that, the judge said that "as bad as things have been for all of the children involved in this case, they can all change their lives for the better."

Terrorism and freedom fighting along the Syria-Iraq border

When some rebel groups kill Syrian government soldiers, the US applauds. When others do the killing, it's 'terrorism.' Why?

War is hell, right? Soldiers do whatever they can to win and survive. Officers do whatever they can to shape engagements so that superior numbers and firepower are rained down on an outnumbered enemy. So why did US State Department Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland label the killing of 46 Syrian troops in Iraq last week an act of ?terrorism? on Monday?

Aside from the fact that the word ?terrorism? has been tortured beyond all semblance of its conventional meaning in the past decade, it?s a comment ? deliberate or not ? that illuminates the strange, dangerous, and contradictory waters the US is wading into in Syria.

The US has recently announced more support for Syria?s rebels and has tacitly approved an arms pipeline paid for by Saudi Arabia and running through Jordan to militias fighting to take down Bashar al-Assad?s regime. Syria has been under US sanctions for decades and President George W. Bush's most hawkish advisers, like Dick Cheney, were eager to invade Syria on the heels of Iraq in 2003.

So the killing of Syrian soldiers by rebels is good, right? Well, not exactly. Depending on who does the killing it can be labelled as terrorism or the actions of a people striving to be free.

Where the weapons are

In this case the killing was done by the Islamic State in Iraq (ISI), an Al Qaeda affiliated group that's been helping its Syrian comrades across the border. Among their friends are Jabhat al-Nusra, one of the most effective rebel military units, which was recently added to the US terrorist list. The militia is largely composed of jihadis, ideologically akin to Al Qaeda, and the US has been worried that the arms and prestige they?re accruing in the fight against Assad will be turned on American interests later.

The large number of Sunni Islamists in the fight in Syria, many of whom have traveled from around the region to fight Assad and his heretical (in their eyes) Alawite faith, much as jihadis flocked to fight the Americans in Iraq, or the Russians in Afghanistan, frighten the US.?

US officials say the arms flowing into Syria have bypassed Nusra and other jihadi groups, but in most conflicts like this, weapons flow to the best fighters, and Nusra like to lead from the front. Civilian leaders of the uprising have been exasperated with the US position, complaining that the US is more interested in measuring the length of rebels' beards than in seeing them defeat Assad. ?

Not surprisingly, reporters on the ground say they?ve started to see the weapons Saudi Arabia is buying from Croatia to arm the ?good? rebels in jihadi hands.

The US has spent months trying to find a way to support the anti-Assad side of the Syrian civil war in a way that will limit sectarian killings and other atrocities, and steer pro-American forces into the best position to take over the country if and when the current regime collapses.

Has it found a good way to do this? No. It?s a nearly impossible task, particularly now that the war has dragged on for more than two years with nearly 70,000 dead and one in 20 Syrians displaced from their homes. It?s hard to imagine a decisive victory ? for either the rebels, mostly members of Syria?s Sunni Arab majority, or for the regime, which relies heavily on the Alawite minority Assad belongs to ? that doesn?t lead to large numbers of sectarian reprisal killings.

Which brings us back to events in Iraq, a country that's no stranger to sectarian violence.

According to Ms. Nuland, the Syrian soldiers killed last week had been wounded on the battlefield and taken to Iraq for medical care. As they were being transported back to the fight, they were ambushed by the ISI. "They were attacked with terrorist tactics," she said, calling the soldiers "noncombatants." In fact, killing enemy soldiers returning to the battlefield is something the US, like most militaries, has done in all of its conflicts.

Iraq support for Assad

So what's going on?

Notice that Iraq is providing at least passive assistance to Assad's military. It has good reason to, notwithstanding that puts it at odds with US policy. The Shiite-dominated Iraq the US helped create is hated by both homegrown jihadis and their friends across the border. A defeat for Assad would lead to a Sunni-dominated neighbor, certain to be more hostile to Iraq's interests and potentially a supporter of a reignited Sunni insurgency.

Syria was a popular safe haven and transit point for insurgents during the height of the Iraq war (while Assad had reason to fear jihadis himself, given that the US had repeatedly threatened an invasion, allowing them to tie up US forces in another country made sense) and could easily become one again under a Sunni regime.?

So it's the US position that looks strange. It spent billions of dollars and the lives of nearly 4,500 soldiers in Iraq, fighting to put down a Sunni insurgency that was described as a grave threat to American interests. Today, the US government policy is assisting a Sunni insurgency in Syria that is not only similar in character to the one put down in Iraq, but has surviving Iraqi veterans of the war serving in it. The ISI?s core strength is in Anbar Province (these folks fought ferocious pitched battles against the US in Fallujah in 2004 and 2005), and its members have strong family and tribal ties along the Euphrates river into Syria.

The US knows this, and is trying to find a way to reassure countries like Iraq that Sunni Islamists will not dominate Syria if Assad is defeated. After all, Iraq may be helping Assad a little bit, but it could do a lot more if its alarm levels rise. In essence, the US is pursuing a policy that's harmful to Iraqi interests, can potentially empower people that are hostile to both Iraqi and US interests, and is trying to use language to smooth all this over.?

Which led Nuland into a very odd, strained statement. She appeared to define terrorism as killing anyone not in the middle of an all-out battle. "We?ve been pretty clear about calling out attacks against folks who are not in the middle of a firefight all the way through this from both sides," she said. By this definition, every drone assassination carried out by the Bush and Obama administrations has been terrorism, as have the frequent tactics of bombing or ambushing insurgents at home, in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

That's an absurd definition of terrorism. Usually governments say absurd things when the policy being discussed is filled with contradictions.

It further said that in future the tax arrears, in case of self assessment, should be cleared along with the filing of return. The revenue department is plugging each and every source of revenue to achieve the Rs 5.65 lakh crore mop up target under the direct taxes category for this fiscal, which will end on March 31.

To check tax evasion, the government has already sent 35,000 notices to tax payers who are not filing returns and a similar number of notices are in process of being issued.

Goffin cockatoos trade with nuts in an exchange experiment

This press release is available in German.

Waiting: a clever move!

In the 70ties, self-control of human infants was investigated using the prominent 'Stanford Marshmallow Experiment': the children were presented with a marshmallow and were told they could either eat it now or wait and receive a second one if the first one was still intact after a time delay of several minutes. Interestingly, children that were able to wait for the delayed reward showed greater success in adult life than the ones that ate the first marshmallow right away. The ability to anticipate a delayed gain is considered cognitively challenging since it requires not only the capacity to control an direct impulse but also to assess the gain's beneficial value relative to the costs associated with having to wait as well as the reliability of the trader. Such abilities can be considered precursors of economic decision making and are rarely found outside humans. Only few, typically large brained animals, have been shown to be able to inhibit the consumption of an immediate food reward in anticipation for a bigger one for more than one minute.

Speculative trading of the Goffin cockatoos

A new study at the University of Vienna, on an Indonesian cockatoo species the Goffin's cockatoo which recently made headlines, showed notable results. "The animals were allowed to pick up an initial food item and given the opportunity to return it directly into the experimenter's hand after an increasing time delay. If the initial food item had not been nibbled by this time, the bird received another reward of an even higher preferred food type or of a larger quantity than the initial food in exchange" explains Isabelle Laumer, who conducted the study at the Goffin Lab at the University of Vienna. "Although we picked pecan nuts as initial reward which were highly liked by the birds and would under normal circumstances be consumed straight away, we found that all 14 of birds waited for food of higher quality, such as cashew nut for up to 80 seconds", she further reports.

Evolution of self-control

Alice Auersperg, the manager of the Vienna Goffin Lab says: "When exchanging for better qualities, the Goffins acted astonishingly like economic agents, flexibly trading-off between immediate and future benefits. They did so, relative not only to the length of delay, but also to the difference in trade value between the 'currency' and the 'merchandise': they tended to trade their initial items more often for their most preferred food, than for one of intermediate preference value and did not exchange in a control test in which the value of the initial item was higher than that of the expected one". She adds: "While human infants or primates can hold the initial food in their hands, one should also consider that the birds were able to wait, although they had to hold the food in their beaks, directly against their taste organs while waiting. Imagine placing a cookie directly into a toddler's mouth and telling him/her, he/she will only receive a piece of chocolate if the cookie is not nibbled for over a minute".

Thomas Bugnyar, who previously conducted similar studies on ravens and crows, says "Until recently, birds were considered to lack any self-control. When we found that corvids could wait for delayed food, we speculated which socio-ecological conditions could favor the evolution of such skills. To test our ideas we needed clever birds that are distantly related to corvids. Parrots were the obvious choice and the results on Goffins show that we are on the right track".

Tesla Model X delayed till late 2014 as company focuses on S series

Tesla subtly announced in its recent annual report that its Model X won't be arriving any time this year. Our sister site, AutoBlog Green, confirmed that the SUV model has been pushed back to a late 2014 release, citing a focus on its S model for now. The company reckons it won't affect profits though, adding that it sees "increased sales volume potential" in its Model S series. Well, there's certainly plenty of interest.

BlackBerry India's Managing Director quits weeks after company's ...

BlackBerry India Managing Director(MD) Sunil Dutt, who recently unveiled the company?s next generation of smartphones with the launch of the BlackBerry Z10, has resigned. He had joined the company in December 2011. The BlackBerry Z10 has been seen as an important launch for the beleaguered company, as it fights to gain back the market share against market competitors such as Apple?s iPhone and Google?s Android operating system.

blackberry-india-md-sunil-dutt-quits

The news of Dutt?s resignation is extremely surprising as Thorston Heins, the CEO of BlackBerry had stated that the Z10 had received encouraging response in India. In fact initial batches of Z10 had sold out 2 days after the launch.

?I was surprised when we launched in India how well the Z10, which is a high-end device, sold. We shipped into the channel product that we thought would have been good for at least five days and I got an emergency call from our manager in India, saying that they were sold out in two days.?

blackberry-z10

A BlackBerry India spokesperson has confirmed the news.

?I can confirm Sunil Dutt has left his position as Managing Director, BlackBerry India with immediate effect. We wish Sunil well for the future. In the interim, Rick Costanzo, Executive Vice President for Global Sales, will take over the leadership of the talented management team in India as we start the search for a new Sales lead as soon as possible. India is an extremely important market for BlackBerry and our aim is to continue to build on our recent momentum with the launch of BlackBerry 10.?

There is no denying that BlackBerry?s market share has been falling steeply not in India but also in the rest of the world. This jolt only heightens the troubles of the Canada-based smartphone maker. India has been one of the markets where BlackBerry has had a good foothold. BlackBerry also has a strong brand value, especially among the youth in India. I might go on to say that BlackBerry was even a status symbol some time back in the country.

According to a Voice & Data Survey, RIM?s revenues dropped 25 percent to Rs 1,460 crore from Rs 1,950 crore between 2011-12 as compared to 2011.

RIM had a market share of 4.7 percent and was at the fourth spot behind Nokia, Samsung and Micromax. Cybermedia Research had also reported in the last quarter of 2012 that while Apple shipped 280,000 devices in India, BlackBerry only shipped 210,000 units. BlackBerry sales now account for less than 5 percent of smartphone sales worldwide.

I could name a number of good reasons which have led to the downfall of BlackBerry. One major reason was that RIM?s management refused to believe that Androids and iPhones were bringing about a change in user needs. The main reason was they failed to innovate; and ultimately got dethroned and even lost out the advantages of their USP: business-class email servers and the popular BBM. Smartphones from competitors with a huge number of apps then gave RIM(now BlackBerry) a run for their money. Later on, BlackBerry also dabbled with a tablet, Playbook which came with a QNX-based OS, but to no avail.

On the other hand, the company?s launch of BlackBerry 10 sporting smartphone Z10 has received praise from the tech media industry to some extent(there were brickbats as well).

BlackBerry 10 has been touted as the only scope of a rebirth for the company. I feel BlackBerry can rise up to the competition, provided they make the right moves. The way the next few months pan out, I think will decide whether BlackBerry will live or die.

Until then, fingers crossed.

College Fails to Protect African-American Women From Divorce ...

By Janice Wood Associate News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on March 10, 2013

College Fails to Protect African-American Women From Divorce Married couples who have attained higher levels of education are less likely to divorce than less-educated couples ? except in the African-American community, according to new research.

?African-American women don?t seem to enjoy the same degree of protection that education confers on marriage,? said Jeounghee Kim, Ph.D., an assistant professor at Rutgers School of Social Work.

?For white Americans, higher education is related to a lower chance of divorce, and this protective effect of education on marriage increased consistently among the recent generations. But for African-American women, higher education is not necessarily related to a lower chance of divorce.?

In her study, published in the journal Family Relations, Kim observed that while the divorce rate has remained steady for white women since 1980, the trend has been less stable for African-American women.

She studied white and African-American women in five-year marriage cohorts starting from 1975 to 1979 and ending in 1995 to 1999. The researcher also took into account demographic characteristics, such as age, geographic region, motherhood status and post-secondary education (associate degree at minimum) when married.

She then measured marital dissolution (within nine years of first marriage) rather than by legal divorce, which many African-American women eschew in favor of a permanent separation.

Kim?s analysis revealed that the percentage of white women with some post-secondary education continuously increased throughout the cohorts. This was not the case with African-American women, whose educational attainment peaked in the 1985-1994 cohorts before declining.

At the same time, she found the percentage of white women getting divorced declined throughout the study period, while African-American women experienced an increase in the 1980s before declining in the 1990 to 1994 cohort.

Kim said her findings were consistent with much existing literature that says that women with higher levels of education ? and greater earning potential ? make more attractive marriage partners. Also, their marriages tend to last longer than those of their counterparts ? particularly among white women ? with less education.

But the research also raises questions about why African-American women?s higher education does not have a strong protective effect on marriage.

?One possibility is that college education does not translate into the higher earnings that would help protect marriage for African-Americans,? she said. ?Another could be that educational attainment may be insufficient to address the high levels of economic inequality that even well-educated African-Americans experience. Many are the first in their families to have attained a post-secondary education and do not benefit from the cushion of intergenerational wealth possessed by some white families.?

A third possibility involves the gender gap in African-Americans? educational attainment ? there are nearly twice as many African-American women college graduates as men.

?We see the increasing power of education protecting marriage within the same socioeconomic class,? Kim said. ?Well-educated white women may still have power to select an equally well-educated mate. Then, there may be a synergy factor ? higher incomes, better and healthier lives, smarter kids ? that helps sustain their marriage.

?On the other hand, the return on higher education may not be the same for many African-American women, who have less chance to marry their educational equals,? she continues. ?Also, because they are less likely to marry outside their race, their choices are limited.?

SKorea, US begin drills as NKorea threatens war

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? South Korea and the United States began annual military drills Monday despite North Korean threats to respond by voiding the armistice that ended the Korean War and launching a nuclear attack on the U.S.

After the start of the drills, South Korean officials said their northern counterparts didn't answer two calls on a hotline between the sides, apparently following through on an earlier vow to cut the communication channel because of the drills.

Pyongyang has launched a bombast-filled propaganda campaign against the drills, which involve 10,000 South Korean and about 3,000 American troops, and last week's U.N. vote to impose new sanctions over the North's Feb. 12 nuclear test. Analysts believe that much of that campaign is meant to shore up loyalty among citizens and the military for North Korea's young leader, Kim Jong Un.

Pyongyang isn't believed to be able to build a warhead small enough to mount on a long-range missile, and the North's military has repeatedly vowed in the past to scrap the 1953 armistice. North Korea wants a formal peace treaty, security guarantees and other concessions, as well as the removal of 28,500 U.S. troops stationed in South Korea.

Still, South Korean and U.S. officials have been closely monitoring Pyongyang's actions and parsing the torrent of recent rhetoric from the North, which has been more warlike than usual.

North Korea regularly claims South Korea-U.S. drills are a preparation for invasion, but Pyongyang has signaled more worry about the drills that began Monday. The drills follow U.N. sanctions that the North says are the result of U.S. hostility aimed at toppling its political system.

North Korea has also warned South Korea of a nuclear war on the divided peninsula and said it was cancelling nonaggression pacts.

Under newly inaugurated President Park Geun-hye, South Korea's Defense Ministry, which often brushes off North Korean threats, has looked to send a message of strength in response to the latest threats. The ministry warned Friday that the North's government would "evaporate from the face of the Earth" if it ever used a nuclear weapon. The White House also said the U.S. is fully capable of defending itself against a North Korean ballistic attack.

North Korea has said the U.S. mainland is within the range of its long-range missiles, and an army general told a Pyongyang rally last week that the military is ready to fire a long-range nuclear-armed missile to turn Washington into a "sea of fire."

While outside scientists are still trying to determine specifics, the North's rocket test in December and third atomic bomb test last month may have pushed the country a step closer to acquiring the ability to hit the U.S. with weapons of mass destruction. Analysts, however, say Pyongyang is still years away from acquiring the smaller, lighter nuclear warheads needed for a credible nuclear missile program.

But there are still worries about a smaller conflict. North Korea has a variety of missiles and other weapons capable of striking South Korea. In 2010, North Korea shelled a South Korean island and allegedly torpedoed a South Korean warship, killing a total of 50 South Koreans.

Both incidents occurred near the disputed western sea boundary, a recurring flashpoint between the Koreas that has seen three other bloody naval skirmishes since 1999.

Kim Jong Un visited two islands just north of the sea boundary last week and ordered troops there to open fire immediately if a single enemy shell is fired on North Korean waters. Kim was also quoted as saying his military is fully ready to fight an "all-out war" and that he will order a "just, great advance for national unification" if the enemy makes even a slight provocation, according to the North's official Korean Central News Agency.

Despite the threats, South Korea and the U.S. began the 11-day war games as scheduled Monday. The allies have repeatedly said the drills and other joint exercises are defensive in nature and they have no intention of attacking the North.

A U.S. military statement said the exercise is not related to current events on the Korean Peninsula.

The drills are part of larger war games that began March 1 and are set to go on for two months.

U.S. troops in South Korea are meant to prevent North Korean aggression, U.S. and South Korean officials say, and are a legacy of the Korean War, which ended with the peace treaty that leaves the Korean Peninsula still technically in a state of war.
